Crif Dogs This is a double review that is actually from July 4th weekend. We had a couple friends up this weekend and we were looking for some late night eats. What better than greasy hot dogs and fries, right? The first place we went to is a small hot dog shop,Crif Dogs, tucked away on St. Mark’s Place between 1st Ave and Avenue A. The secret behind Crif Dogs is actually a bar that you can get into through a telephone booth located in the shop. It’s a little wild and I have to admit that I’ve never actually tried to get in. Crif Dogs specializes in wild hot dog creations. Just a couple examples are the “Good Morning”,which is a bacon wraped hot dog with cheese and a fried egg,and the “Philly Tubesteak”,which is essentially a cheese steak but with a hot dog instead of the steak. My personal favorite and the one pictured in this post is the “Spicy Redneck”. This item is a bacon wrapped hot dog topped with chili and cole slaw. A heart attack waiting to happen…but so very very delicious. Pommes Frites The next place we went to was Pommes Frites which is dangerously close to Crif Dogs at the intersection of St Mark’s and 2nd Ave. Pommes Frites specializes in Belgian fries and I can’t say that I’m a big fan of the actual fries but their dipping sauces are amazing. When you order the fries, the fries are typically freshly fried and they’ll toss it with salt right in front of you. The sauces are $1 extra but you can order three for $2.50 and they are definitely worth it. We chose to get the roasted garlic mayo, the wasabi mayo, and the curry ketchup. I’m not entirely sold on the garlic mayo. Not sure if it’s just the composition of the sauce or my taste buds, but it didn’t seem like the taste of the garlic could get by the mayo. The other two were amazing and actually complimented the fries quite well.
